Hkcampus mail and web account guideline



Here is a brief user guide for our services.While you read on, please notice that our school code is <hlm>.
For example, when I say you should use
the server <sch-code>.hkcampus.net and our school's school code is "hlm",
then you should use the server "hlm.hkcampus.net" instead.


1. To check and send mail:

Please note that Teacheres mail address is <username>@hlm.hkcampus.net.Example: if your username is hlm-ckh, then your mail address is hlm-ckh@hlm.hkcampus.net.

a) option 1

You may telnet to hlm.hkcampus.net and login with your own
username and password.
Then type pine and follow the instruction and you can check mail.

b) option 2

You may use your favourite mail client program like Netscape Mail,
Eudora, MS Internet Mail and Outlook Express.
Set the POP3 (Incoming mail) server to be hlm.hkcampus.net,
SMTP (Outgoing mail) server to be hlm.hkcampus.net.
Remark: IF you are using other ISP as your dial up service
provider, please use your own ISP's SMTP server.
With your userid and password, you can download your mail.

c) option 3 (Recommended)

You may use web-based mail services.Webmail services allow users
to check email with a simple web browser (e.g. Netscape, Internet Explorer)
anywhere anytime provided that they have access to the World Wide Web. The
URL can be found at http://www.hkcampus.net/services.


2.teachers' webpage and URL address

You can now put your webpages on the net.
The steps are as follow:

a. put all your web-pages (*.htm and *.html) files under the
directory "public_html" in your home directory. The first page
of your homepage's file name must be "index.html".
b. telnet to your login server (hlm.hkcampus.net)
c. type the following command after you have login.

cd public_html [enter]
chmod a+r * [enter]
chmod a+x . [enter]

then you can view your homepages under the URL :
http://hlm.hkcampus.net/~usernameExample: if your username is hlm-ckh, then your homepage is under the URL:http://hlm.hkcampus.net/~hlm-ckh

You may use ftp programs to upload the html and images files to
the directory "public_html" e.g. cuteftp, WS_FTP.


3. Changing password

IMPORTANT: New passwords will be effective AFTER 20 MINS, thus,
the newly changed password will take some time to be effective.

Option 1:
Go to http://www.hkcampus.net/services
select §ó§ï±K½X from the side menu on the left hand side.
Follow the instruction there.


Option 2:
Simply telnet to your login server e.g. hlm.hkcampus.net
login with your username and password
type

passwd [enter]

and follow the instructions.
Note: Please remember your password! Since without the password,
you cannot access our any services and password reset is
required. This will complicate our work at the moment.



4. Dialup services for teachers

NOTE: Dial-up access is provide to teachers ONLY, students cannot
access the internet thourgh our dial-up lines at home.

The time limit is from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am weekday and fullday on
holiday.
Time quota is 14hrs/week, and it will reset on Monday morning.
Phone number is 29328100 and the userid and password is the same
as the email account of the teacher. Basically, all the setting are
identical to school's dialup account.

POP3 server: hlm.hkcampus.net
SMTP server: hlm.hkcampus.net
TELNET server:hlm.hkcampus.net
Dialup time for teachers: 6:00pm to 6:00am weekdays, full day for holidays
Dialup quota: 14hrs/week
Disk quota for students and teachers' account : 10MB for homepage files
and 5MB for mail
Query hotline: 26098372

Note: From the beginning ofSeptember, new account would not be entitled to the dialup account service since this project is expried.

Note: Please keep check of your mail box usage. If your mail box is full,
you will not receive any new mail unless you delete some mails in your
account to free out some spaces.
